Generic DAM versus photographic DAM

An enterprise DAM handles logos, videos, documents, and distribution rights, usually for marketing teams. A photographic collection has different needs.

What a generic DAM does: Centralize distribution, manage usage rights, serve renditions to distributed teams.
What a photo collection needs: Describe precisely, keep capture context, prove integrity across decades.
File realities: RAW files, RAW+JPEG pairs, virtual copies, and versions do not exist in a general-purpose DAM.
Tempo: A photographic collection is consulted rarely but must stay readable for a long time, the opposite of a marketing library.

What local-first changes

An online DAM bills per seat and per stored volume, and access to your images depends on that service continuing to exist. A local DAM shifts those constraints.

Availability: The catalog opens offline, without authentication, regardless of any third-party service.
Volume: Cost does not grow with image count: it depends on your own disks.
Reversibility: XMP sidecars and manifests stay readable without the application, which limits lock-in.
Privacy: Images are not sent through a third-party service to be indexed or analyzed.

What Obscura Flow does not do

An online DAM remains the right choice in several situations, and it is more honest to say so.

Simultaneous collaboration: There is no real-time concurrent editing of a shared catalog.
Public distribution portal: There is no self-service portal for external clients.
Contractual rights management: Tracking commercial licenses and their expiry is not the product's purpose.
Cross-platform: The application is native macOS; there is no Windows or Linux version today.

How is this different from an enterprise DAM?

An enterprise DAM is usually an online service centered on distribution and rights, billed per seat. Obscura Flow is a local application centered on documenting and preserving a photographic body of work, usable offline.

Is the cloud required?

No. Obscura Flow is local-first and fully usable offline. Cloud features are only used for backups, publishing, and sync that you choose.

Do I need an account?

No. Local use requires neither an account nor a connection. Login only adds licensing, sync, and optional remote logging.

What happens if I stop using Obscura Flow?

Your originals never left your disks, and metadata is written to XMP sidecars, a standard format other tools can read. Archives remain packages accompanied by their manifest: nothing depends on the application still being installed.

Which platforms does Obscura Flow run on?

Obscura Flow is a native macOS application. There is no Windows or Linux version today, and on-device analysis relies on Apple technologies.

Can it handle large archives?

Yes. SQLite cataloging, virtualized galleries, and parallel processing remain usable on tens of thousands of images.
