A reference import no longer reports a renamed folder. After importing a Lightroom catalogue by reference, the app announced — at import time and then at every library open — that the project’s folder had been renamed outside it, naming an expected folder that had never existed, and concluded that no replacement had been found. The last sentence even suggested plugging in an unrelated drive.
Referencing means cataloguing photos where they already are: no file is written, so the project folder is never created. The displaced-folder detection, which flags any project whose folder is absent, therefore fired by construction.
No data was ever at risk: referenced photos resolve through their absolute path, not through the project folder. A project whose imports are all by reference now has no folder to lose — and a project that really does hold its own files is still flagged, with the replacement folder offered whenever it is certain.
